Telegram is easily the worst, the thing with it is just that there are lots of groups in there, and it's used by mainstream orgs as well. Tox's lack of maintenance is a little concerning, I'm not sure how much to trust it at this point, it reminds me of when truecrypt suddenly bailed, so it makes me suspicious. Session seems ok, it has a lot going for it in keeping IP's hidden (though if you are up to things, you should probably have layers ahead of that anyway). SimpleX also seems fairly good, I've played around with deploying some of their node technology it so far looks promising.

All that said when it comes to similar "functionality" including bots and the like, matrix is the most viable alternative to what telegram does, particularly with rooms they way that functions. None of the meta you can put in there really matters, and anyone can stand up a server and go, or use any of the plethora of open servers.

You can choose to generate a New Code for every person to contact you, or you can choose to share a common code.

Either there is NO Account the app is tied too.

XMPP with OTR & Session

OTR is from 2001 and uses weak crypto, less than 2000 bits in the DH keys.
Session is based on the "Oxen Software Stack" and uses "Lokinet" as anonymization software by default, which you cannot change unfortunately. No Tor option far and wide.

If u ask me, the best is self-hosted XMPP with OMEMO (the new and improved encryption) instead of OTR. Yall mfs need to stop using OTR already, the crypto is shite. You just like it because the messages "disappear" after a session.
